Molly Furlong was born on June 12, 1990. The urge for her to make music was started just after Molly’s fifth birthday when she was diagnosed with dyslexia; the school she was at placed her in their beginning strings program on violin. Because she began music at such a young age she learned notes and rhythms before letters and numbers and learned to love them more than anything else in the world. From then on she continued to play violin and gradually added piano and anything else she could get her hands on to play.
Molly began playing the trombone when she was in the fifth grade for the school band. Through her middle and high school careers she played in numerous local bands classical and jazz oriented. As her high school career got started she became a part of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras and thus began her infusion into Boston’s musical community. She also had musical instruction and was influenced greatly by personal experiences with Delfeayo Marsalis as well as Andy Martin and Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band.
As Molly’s high school years were coming to a close she decided that music was her passion applied solely to music schools. She auditioned everywhere in the classical and jazz styles. In the end she chose Berklee for it’s ability to grow musically. She was very fascinated with all of the musical options offered there that there was no competition as to where she was destined to further her musical growth.
Molly is expanding her knowledge of both writing and performing in the music world at Berklee College of Music. She has taken many writing courses such as; Jazz Counterpoint, Chord Scales Voicings for Arranging, Big Band Writing and Vocal Writing to name a few. She is also expanding her performance knowledge by playing with Berklee bands such as; Phil Wilson’s Rainbow Big Band, Lin Biviano’s Urban Outreach Orchestra, Greg Hopkin's Concert Jazz Orchestra and Jackson Shultz’s Chord Scale Madness among many others.
Molly is now a Berklee Graduate with a dual degree in Contemporary Writing and Production and Trombone Performance. She is available for music lessons and also music writing and arranging services which include commercial and corporate music.
She currently performs regularly with the Beantown Swing Orchestra, the Compaq Big Band, Charlie The Most, Ecliptic, and Skattitude as well as freelancing with many other groups around New England. She is also in the process of recording a CD with her newly formed ska band Skattitude.
